Bentley
THE STORY OF BENTLEY
When W.O. Bentley made the first Bentley engine roar to life in 1919 at New Street Mews, London, it signalled the beginning of Bentley Motors - a name that became synonymous with handcrafted luxury, breathtaking power and performance, distinctive design and class. However, a Bentley represents much more than that. It is a legacy of great history and a lifetime of dedication towards building the ultimate car.
A British Triumph
The name Bentley would not be what it is today without the fascinating stories and history behind it. Called the ‘Winged B’, it is the preferred car choice of James Bond, perhaps the most fitting Bentley ambassador, as written by the author Ian Fleming in his novels. It was written in ‘Casino Royale’, Fleming’s first Bond novel, that a 4 ½ litre Bentley was James Bond’s only personal hobby.
It has also played its part in history, where W.O. Bentley designed engines for fighter aircraft during World War I. One of his Bentley engines powered an aircraft that eventually shot down Germany’s Baron Manfred von Richthofen, otherwise known as the famous Red Baron.
Unlike other car brands, Bentley has a unique identity. Besides just auto-making, its achievements have come to symbolise a way of doing things with spirit, flair, courage, instinctive intelligence and teamwork. The racing achievements at Le Mans, with five outright victories between 1924 and 1930 and a sixth in 2003, embody a determination and pursuance of excellence beyond just selling cars. It has always been a way for Bentley to test, strengthen and improve the cars.
Bentley’s popular appeal and reputation throughout the years has become an integral part of British culture and society, led by members of the British Royal Family, who have bought and rode in Bentleys since the beginning. Prince George, who liked his Bentley so much that he bought another and his daughter, Queen Elizabeth picked up his fondness for Bentleys and so did her children.
A labour of love
A Bentley car is unmistakable – all it takes is a glance at the twin headlights, its matrix grille or the high waistline which are its trademark. Each car is hand-built using natural materials of the finest quality, with beautiful craftwork and functions that can be customised to suit your needs. Yet at the heart of the brand is the engine and power, the distinctive surge that has always been the defining characteristic of a Bentley.
Each car is crafted with pride, and delivered with a very British sense of understated class and an effortless presence, which is the hallmark of a Bentley. One customer once said that it is like having your own private car company.
A true connoisseur of Bentley holds passion and interest of the car knowing its real value. While others may do things ‘meticulously’ and ‘painstakingly’, Bentley’s reputation rests on the experienced skills and passion of its people. Many of them say they work on each Bentley as if it were their own. They want to get it right. It is no wonder that every machinist who creates a set of upholstery signs the back of it with his or her initial.
This is the legacy of W.O. Bentley, who loved cars and pursued it with a passion. The Bentley way is perhaps defined by his very own words, “to build a good car, a fast car, the best in class”.
